What
is AK?
By Jackie Reed, MS, DC
There are over 150 different chiropractic
techniques in use today. AK is the abbreviation for one of those techniques,
Applied Kinesiology. “AK is a system of natural health care which evaluates
our structural, chemical and mental aspects. It employs muscle testing with
other standard methods of diagnosis. Nutrition, manipulation, diet,
acupressure, exercise and education are used therapeutically to help restore
balance and maintain well being throughout life.” This definition sums up
what makes an AK chiropractor different. We look for the imbalances in the
body that arise from structural, chemical or nutritional, or mental or
emotional reasons. Finding the cause and the correction is what restores
balance to your body and allows you to feel your best.
Applied Kinesiology had its beginning in
1964 when Dr. George Goodheart was able to strengthen a weak scapula muscle
by rubbing on the origins and insertions of the muscle. From this small
start, the numerous systems and corrections have been developed. The system
is based upon the ancient wisdom of the Chinese meridians. Meridians are the
pathways of energy that flow through the body and upon which all acupuncture
treatments are based. Using AK in a chiropractic session enables me and
other doctors to find the best correction and the true weakness involved in
the imbalance. The system is not as simple as a hands-on only adjustment,
but the time involved is worth it to correct the underlying cause in each
person’s body.
So, the next time your friend or co-worker asks you what AK is, I hope you
will feel more comfortable sharing your experience with them.
